Polyurethane (PU), full name of which is poly (Carbamate), is a kind of high molecular compound. This object was produced by Otto Bayer and others in 1937. Polyurethane has two main categories: polyester and polyether. They can be made into polyurethane plastic (mainly foam plastic), polyurethane fiber (called spandex in China), polyurethane rubber and elastomer. Polyurethane elastomers have properties between plastic and rubber, including oil resistance, wear resistance, low temperature resistance, aging resistance, high hardness, and elasticity. Mainly used in the shoe industry and medical industry. Polyurethane emerged in the 1930s, and after nearly 80 years of technological development, this material has been widely used in the fields of home furnishings, construction, daily necessities, transportation, household appliances, and so on.
Although the production of polyurethane elastomers accounts for a small proportion of the total amount of polyurethane products, it is an indispensable and important polyurethane material and a type of high-performance special synthetic rubber.
Polyurethane elastomers have excellent comprehensive properties, with a modulus between that of general plastics and rubber. It has the following characteristics: high strength and elasticity, and can maintain high elasticity over a wide hardness range (Shore A10- Shore D75); Under the same hardness, the load-bearing capacity is higher than other elastomers; Its excellent wear resistance is 5-10 times that of natural rubber; Excellent oil and chemical resistance; Aromatic polyurethane radiation resistant; Excellent oxygen and ozone resistance; Good fatigue resistance and vibration resistance, suitable for high-frequency bending applications; Good impact resistance; Good low-temperature flexibility; Generally, the required flexible materials can be produced without the need for plasticizers, thus there are no problems caused by plasticizer migration; Ordinary polyurethane cannot be used above 100 ℃, but with a special formula, it can withstand high temperatures of 140 ℃; Low molding and processing costs.
In many cases, compared with metal materials, polyurethane elastic products have the advantages of light weight, low noise, wear resistance, low processing costs, and corrosion resistance. Compared with plastics, polyurethane elastomers have the advantages of non brittleness and wear resistance. Compared with conventional rubber, polyurethane elastomers have the following advantages: wear resistance, cutting resistance, tear resistance, high load-bearing capacity, transparency or translucency, ozone resistance, potting, pouring, and a wide range of hardness.
Polyurethane elastomers, due to their structure consisting of soft and hard segments, can be endowed with excellent properties such as high strength, good toughness, wear resistance, and oil resistance through the design of molecular chains. Polyurethane, known as "wear-resistant rubber," possesses both the high elasticity of rubber and the rigidity of plastic. In the past year, due to the significant decline in crude oil prices, and in the context of the global economic depression, the year-on-year growth of China's polyurethane elastomer market has been slower than in previous years. The imbalance in supply and demand has seriously led to a continuous decline in polyurethane elastomer prices. But this phenomenon only occurs in traditional polyurethane products. The market prospects for elastomer products with high technological content and innovation, such as nano polyurethane elastomer materials, are still very promising.
